Innovation in response to environmental concerns- water supply protection in Austria
Austria faced an issue where the wastewater from coin production at the Austrian Mint exceeded legal chemical limits. Therefore, the Austrian Federal Procurement Agency initiated a three-stage public procurement process to address this. They sought innovative solutions and invited potential suppliers to showcase their innovation track record. The contract terms specified water treatment goals.
What were the outcomes?
The selected solution, an easily deployable evaporator, effectively filters various particles, such as those from metal production, electroplating, photography, printing, pharmaceuticals, and food industries. This adaptable solution has led to a 97% reduction in the Austrian Mint’s fresh water needs, resulting in a yearly saving of four million liters of water.
